Abandoned by her father, C. is brought up by her domineering, intractable grandmother, whom she privately refers to as ‘The Broad’. Raised in the closed environs of a haveli in Jalalabad, C. is rebellious, quick-witted and a self-proclaimed cynic.
So, when The Broad presents her with the ‘suitable’ Taimur as a possible husband, C. isn’t too happy with the arrangement, no matter how gorgeous ‘Alpha Male’ may be. As it happens, the feeling is mutual. Or is it?
And when C.’s long lost father enters the scene, things get really complicated…

3.5 stars, actually. This is a bit like a Bollywood Romance without the musical numbers: an idealized notion of family, a gorgeous old palace locale, a (literally called that) Alpha Male hero, and a sassy, beautiful heroine who doesn't understand her own heart after being protected and home-schooled her whole life by a rich Pakistani family.Chandni was abandoned by her father, and left orphaned by a mother who passed away. She was left to be raised by her grandmother, "The Broad" in safe seclusion. But now she's at a marriageable age, and her dreams of marrying a much older minor noble family friend are about to be upended by her family.
Chandni frustrated me. She is a potentially engaging mix of desire to make choices, literary references (she calls Alpha Male Heathcliff, Dorian Grey, Darcy, etc) and emotion. But...she was really too stupid about her father until incontrovertible proof is basically thrust upon her. I also wanted more actual bantering scenes between her and Alpha Male instead of summaries.
It's a novella, a quick read, so much of it is summarized, again, not my most favorite literary device. I like to read snappy, bantery conversations. While there's some of those here, not quite enough for my personal taste.

good read
Another Mills & Boon style fairy tale. Quite unrealistic and juvenile.
C as she likes to be called is a rarity with all knowledge of literature and innocence which is both exiting as well as interesting .
This is my second book of Ms. Mahals and I LOVED this one just as much as the first (The Contract)!!!
Each one is a page turner and keeps you rivetted from start to finish.
Cannot wait until February when her next book comes out!!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Awesome writing. The protagonist is cute and funny. Though the plot is nothing much to write home about I loved the references to South Asian culture. Enjoyable fare!
Who doesn't love a strong female lead? Haveli, by Zeenat Mahal introduced me o a young woman who thinks she knows her mind, who pursues her single-minded goal with all she's got, and realizes her desires lied elsewhere all along. Taimer, or Alpha Male, is the impish, sexy male counterpart who makes the self-assured, pampered granddaughter of a Nawab question her rationalizations, and opens her eyes to her prejudices. This book had me roaring with laughter, tsking with sympathy and applauding the decisions of the cast. Definitely worth the read, a recommended book for anyone with a soft corner for good writing and a homely narration.
Zeenat Mahal, you rock! Amazing work, thanks for the memories this book brings.
Absolutely brilliant..Loved the banter b/w Chandni and Taimur aka Alpha Male . The story was beautiful and the dialogue between the two main characters with witty and their chemistry was brilliant.Zeenat did an outstanding job once again. Definitely a must read.
